An exploration into IP working is underway, using software not necessarily designed with programme making and events in mind.
These ‘commoditised, multi-tenanted software solutions’ – including 5G – though cheaper, more flexible and solving many problems, often creates new ones. For example synchronicity, a subject close to all of our hearts and keeping quite a few of us in a job!
Being able to connect anywhere, and for as long as we want, is now as expected in the programme making and special events (PMSE) sector, as for any model of mobile phone. PMSE is increasingly looking away from expensive specialist know-how and kit - especially for more ‘cost effective’ projects.
There have been countless previous milestones: original analogue audio and video signals; colour TV; audio and video digitisation – the industry has been quick to build specialist knowledge in creating high-quality content.
Andrew Wilkinson (Production Architect, Technology Strategy and Architecture for BBC) will be talking to us on this topic of Commoditisation. He is also hoping to set up links with interested IPS members, to help with his research and ‘real world’ assessments
