The Institute of Professional Sound is inviting members to come on a tour of the broadcast facilities at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in London, the home of the internationally renowned and recently rebranded Royal Ballet and Opera.
The building is a continuous hive of artistic activity, housing two theatres; the famous Royal Opera House itself and the smaller Linbury Theatre. Not only is the broadcast facility involved with regular broadcasts by BBC Radio 3, it also transmits live performances in 5.1 to cinemas around the world. They also live-stream educational content to schools as part of The Royal Ballet and Opera’s public service remit. To provide these services, the house has a purpose built broadcast facility, complete with two 5.1 Sound Control Rooms.
The tour will include an opportunity to experience the 5.1 mix rooms, recently refurbished by Munro Acoustics and now equipped with Avid S6 consoles, driving Pro Tools or Pyramix along with a smaller Lawo console for presentation. In addition you will be able to visit the famous Royal Opera House auditorium, and back stage systems, showing the mechanisms allowing the house to turn around sets in the shortest time.
The tour will last 2-3 hours
Note: The Royal Opera House is a 24/7 working theatre complex, so we might have to adjust the planned itinerary for operational reasons. This is also why we must limit the number of people we can accommodate on the tour.
Limited Places: Please register your interest to attend and we will inform you one week before the tour whether you have a place or if you are on the waiting list.
We realise that plans can change, so if you are lucky enough to get a place but then cannot attend please let us know as soon as possible so that we can reallocate your place to the next person on the waiting list.
